JACKED UP PROPOSAL:

My proposal deals with evolution and the mysteries behind it. The subject that I chose to delve into is that of my black spore from my previous project the digiscape. I wanted to explore the inner workings of how the spore was able to multiple from one entity into hundreds and their ability to allow for new life. The project will put an emphasis on the education of the process of evolution through almost a comical way. The spores themselves will interact with each other and carrying on some human traits. In each evolutionary section the organism gains more intelligence and thus gets a little crazier and crazier. I’m taking away ultimate control over the organism and making this piece more directional as far as options go.

Final Animation Proposal: Evolution

Proposal:
The project that I’m proposing to accomplish is an animation that showcases the evolution of a one-cell organism into different multi cell organisms. The animation will consist of a simple navigational system that will be integrated within the scenes. During several stages of evolution the user will have the ability to go into a cross section view to analyze the inside workings in microscopic form. The creatures will be based off some of the conceptual ideas of MARS-1 and my digiscape at the beginning of the semester. If possible I would like to have the animations themselves seem as if they were drawn on vellum so the user has a slight blurred view of the next scene. The ability to see the next scene adds on another layer of context in showing the complexity of organisms. As far as color theory is concerned with the animation I will stay away from heavy use of pastels and focus on a neutral palette throughout. The overall piece is to provoke a feeling of education through abstract cellular forms.

The dreaded mixer. The thing that had me on the wall was the fact that my pause and play button for the main background music was messing up big time for me. So I took it out for now until I fix the code. I'm also working on multiple sliders for each musical item. When I tried to multiple them it kept controlling all of the music. STRANGE SHIT!!!!

Out of all of these I don't know what to really talk about. I liked every one of these sites and the music players for particular reasons. The first one reminds me so much of Jordan's project. I love the fact that it is more elaborate but simple in design. You're having a great jam session using riffs that blend well with the background music. The interaction with the crowd is a great addition because instead of him just saying whatever, he is actually singing the praise.

The second link really attracted me for some of the same reasons as the first one. The turn tables are great and the music itself are in sync. I wish there was more variety in the piece. They start to do it with the little mixing buttons for melodies but it doesn't do anything for me musically.

I love moodstream by gettyimages simply because of the pictures that appear randomly that go together with the musical mood. I love that concept so much that I want to do a jump off of that if possible. I wish it was more visual as far as switching off the images to something mathematically made from the music itself.

Potential Project Idea

I really don't know what I want to do for a project that deals with audio. Right now I feel burnt out on some major ideas. I know that I would love to do some original compositions using Garage Band and some track sampling from some bands. Some of the cool features that I saw while navigating the links on the main blog was music sites with great visualizations. I love the fact that you can click on a certain menu and the music would change to that particular mood. I want something like that with the edibility of the turn tables. Something simple that is easy for users to navigate and get into. I don't want anything complicated that a normal person can't understand because there are a few sites I feel will just blow up in their minds.

ASSIGNMENT WRITE UP PHOTO BOOTH

I must admit the fact that we did a photo booth as an assignment was pretty cool. In the beginning when first hearing the idea I thought it was going to be complete shit. I mean come on....a photo booth? How many times has that been done? Once the ball got rolling I was pretty happy. I got to sit down and help design some cool cards for the event and Scottie was down with helping with the printing. The fact that Anthony and Michael were confident enough to tackle the action scripting made the experience a lot easier. It could have been ten times worse. The set up of the monitors and cameras were pretty smooth sailing and the overall mood thanks to certain items made it that much of an experience for the visitors. Scaring the crap out of them was fun. Some of the major mishaps I wish didn't happen was the naming system of the pictures. That part fell on me and the fact that the pictures all started over at one without any names confused me when posting. It took forever to match faces through Facebook and memory. That could be improved. Another thing is talking to the visitors a bit too long before they went in. It should be a smooth transition from person to person. I wish the tape would've been pressed off when no one was in there and then resumed because there is a lot of wasted tape that could've helped us in capturing the elusive Duran. We will get you next time.

Overall there is no complaints about the work done by the group. Nothing bad to report on. We all pulled our weight. Me and the Scottie did the press releases as far as cards, posters and making the blog. Anthony and Mike did the code which looks good to me. Also another side note is that Scottie provided the curtain and such. So everyone pulled their weight.

By all means this isn't a complete interface there are still some things that I want to fix before everything is said and done. Like when you enter I need to stop the interface so you can click the blue dot and go to the next scene. Also add some content to the end scene and beyond. *Sorry for the small text I don't know why it is doing that. The resolution is 1024 x 768*

On the revisions end. I basically just added on to one of them but the others were adding in code that would help it function properly. Nothing major. I enjoy the fact that some of it is still wonky to show my progression from where I started until now. Mainly just the sake of review committees.

Video Script

Overall I didn't have much problem with the video script at all thanks to how simple it is. I searched around for a way to try and make the actual video black and white through script but haven't found it. I think that would've set the project off a little more. I still want to tweak the volume system and have the little black button at the bottom to the right cut the television on and off.

Overall I enjoyed making this little animation because I was able to focus on one of the aspects of Dante's Purgatorio. I recommend the book to anyone that hasn't read it yet. I tried to keep the coding simple and the animation to a minimum. Didn't want to overwork myself. The hard part was basically making frame by frame for a lot of it in Illustrator so it could have a particular style. I added different subtle effects on the second scene but I don't know if it will show up. One thing I just found out was that the fonts on the computer wasn't the same as the one of my computer so some of my text is messed up. I can just re upload the file later with the corrections.

Personally Jill I am sorry that this isn't the best animation ever. I've spent time working on the code to get it just right thanks to Micheals. Later on in the animation I will have many more symbols and such going on. For right now I'm just very happily tired mass of poo poo on the platter brain melting away. That means it is really early and I'm just happy that I got this far. I will add more. To operate it click and drag the rock into the left corner of the grass to toss it. Sorry it is confusing.

NEW WRITE UP!!!

This has got to be the longest I've ever worked on an animation. I totally thought everything was just going to be simple and just done in a snap. NOPE! I ultimately fixed the dragging and dropping issues and updated the look of the animation. The one thing I can't figure out is why is it not really playing the movies smoothly. SCRATCHE THAT I FIGURED IT OUT AND I'M HAPPY!

Overall I didn't think this process was going to take this long for an animation. Oh well I was able to complete it with some good results I assume. The movie is dedicated to my man Jordan and his inspiring ninja animation. It took a while to storyboard out and figure out how to do everything correctly but once I got into the groove it was smooth sailing. More time management is needed.

Explain what the difference between an event handler and a frame event?

To my knowledge the difference between an event handler and a frame event is a event handler occurs differently than the frame event. The frame event consists of that particular symbol or instance having its own source of animation/code. While the event handler deals more with executing a particular function with code. The best way I can put it responds to the two primary events in actionscripting : 1. Events related to the timeline.
2. Events associated with frames in the timeline.

For the actionscript lessons I tried to keep it simple due to some tight time constrictions with NPDA. Overall the whole experience was challenging since I don't know a lot about action scripting yet but what I did achieve made me very happy at least. I'm going to revise these lessons later on to improve on my the animations. The shit is just tricky about certain functions.

Woo. I'm pretty happy with the results that I have from my final animation of my digiscape. It has been a long journey from sketch to fully animated form. I ran into a lot of problems when animating some of my elements because majority of what I wanted to do could only be done with the help of action scripting. I think it would've been a nice element with the aid of action scripting to have different particles of the spore launching around screen when clicked on the stage. I feel that there is still some much needed tweaking to be done on the timing of each element as they move from frame to frame. Something that will allow the transition to be a little smoother. I planned big and although I didn't get it personally there with all the big movie star effects I wanted...I still had to tell myself this is suppose to be a basic animation showing our knowledge of the lessons. The one thing I regret not including was the shadows as the suns roll by. I tried to get those right but it just looked as if the shadow transitions were too choppy. If you have any ideas on how I may be able to fix this then please tell me.

Assignment Write Up For Animation

When I was working on the animation the trouble that I was having with completing it was that whenever I made the suns rotate around each other they didn't carry this feeling of being mechanical. The suns seemed to just stick to the path and feel too preschool animation. The one thing that I did enjoy about finding out thanks to my search of http://www.phong.com is a flash actionscript portal site that helped me figure out how to achieve the effect of a meteor shower. The meteor shower will be on a controlled loop in the background and I'm trying to find a script that will help with randomizing the shots across the sky. Another thing that I found useful from the portal site is a script that'll allow me to change my cursor into the dust(spores). The next step is to create clickable mounds in the foreground so it'll animate the spores digging into the mounds to make the new plant life that will show the creation of the dust particles.

Answer 2:The difference between a frame with an empty circle and a frame with a black circle is that the frame with the empty white circle is a blank keyframe that has no information on it ready to animate. The black circle on the frame means there is stored information in that frame and it is called a keyframe.

Answer 3:One of the main reasons people use Flash is to code actionscripts with the program that allows animations to be more fluid. Another reason people use Flash is to create animated interfaces that viewers can interact with.

Answer 4:You can only motion tween a symbol or graphic.

Answer 5: You can tell the difference between a shape and a symbol because when you click on a shape it highlights the whole object in little dots that look like halftones. When you click on a symbol the whole object is selected with the outline and it doesn't include the little dots.

After reading the article a couple of times now I feel like I have this burning question about why is it still so hard to find a place to exhibit net.art work? I mean in this day and age we have access to the internet through everything in our homes and I feel the next generation of artists will have the ability to tap into these devices and exhibit work. Sort of like Heath Bunting and his work with the phone booths. That was brilliant why can't we as computer savvy artists be able to do something like that. Nothing is really stopping us other than scared corporations who don't want any kind of open sourcing of their code. What do they have to hide?

Write Up:
Starting off after receiving the assignment I knew that I wanted to make a surreal/alien landscape. I found inspiration in artists that I had on file in my personal library at home. Tim Biskup, Mars-1, David Choe, and Jeff Soto were some of the artists I wanted to sort of mimic in style and color. While working on developing the digiscape I found that I couldn't exactly get my piece to be what I totally wanted it to be because I wanted to keep in mind we have to animate an aspect of it. By eliminating several elements of the sketch I could focus more on polishing up my environment. Hopefully by the time I go to animate the digiscape I can add elements over it in Flash instead of drawing them up in Illustrator and placing them.

A.Response To Interview:
What defines a piece as net.art presently? We have so many sites out there that support artists that want to show their works around the world but we don't necessarily classify them as net.art artists. Maybe it is a term no one knows about or no one wants to be categorized in per say.

B. Review of EMOTICONS: SMILE:
When I look at this piece of work it reminds of the posters of famous musicians made out of small album covers and pictures taken through their lifetime. The piece Emoticons:Smile is ironic because we're basically seeing a bunch of smiling emoticons in different hex color codes forming Da Vinci's famous painting. Since digital media entered the field of art has the perception of art changed?

Question 2.

A relevant section of digital art represents Internet based art. The Internet hardly existed, but artists conquered already this new field for their artistic activities. Can the work of these early artists be compared with those who work with advanced technologies nowadays? What changed until these days? What might be the perspectives for future developments?

Question 3.

The term "netart" is widely used for anything posted on the net; there are dozens of definitions that mostly are even contradictory. How do you define "netart" or if you like the description "Internet based art" better? Do you think "netart" is art, at all, if yes, what are the criteria? Are there any aesthetic criteria for an Internet based artwork?

Question 4.

Dealing with this new, and interactive type of art demands an active viewer or user, and needs the audience much more and in different ways than any other art discipline before. How do you think would be good ways to stimulate the user to dive into this new world of art? What do you think represents an appropriate environment to present net based art to an audience, is it the context of the lonesome user sitting in front of his personal computer, is it any public context, or is it rather the context of art in general or media art in particular, or anything else.? If you would be in the position to create an environment for presenting this type of art in physical space, how would you do it?

As Internet based art, as well as other art forms using new technologies are (globally seen) still not widely accepted, yet, as serious art forms, what do you think could be an appropriate solution to change this situation?

Question 1:

The perception of art has changed since the arrival of digital mediums. What really pushes the idea is the fact that you can imitate almost anything surrounding us and translate it electronically. This could be seen as an easy way out of getting the full hands on experience.

Question 2:

Internet art is still very recent in creation and the foundation that the veterans of the genre made are still seen in the newer pieces. The only difference is that since the advancements in technology we're able to mask that foundation to give it a little originality. Question 3:

I wouldn't even know where to begin to define the term net.art. Personally the whole genre is too broad to cover because like the question asks..anything and everything on the Internet can have the term attached to it. What I could classify as net.art are some pieces that i've seen that have incorporated science/programming those are the most interesting pieces to me. Question 4:

The best way to showcase net.art is to use some of the new advancements in PC/MAC viewing. Like later this year Microsoft is suppose to release a beta of their new touch screen projection system for their operating systems. Why not have something like that for galleries where a viewer can walk into their own little cubicles and access the featured art exhibit. Skys the limit.

Question 5:

That is a hard question to answer. I wouldn't even know where to start to help net.art become a more recognized art form.
